Midweek Church
Midweek Church was originally designed to give those who did not come to church on Sunday another, and a different, opportunity to worship. In the last couple of years its focus has changed and it has become more of an in-depth teaching session for people who are alrady at the heart of the church community.
Reflecting on this change in function, and the steady decline in numbers attending, the ministry team, who lead the sessions, felt that it was time for a change, and it has been decided that we will bring midweek church to an end.
The closure of one particular door means that we have the opportunity to open other ones. One such door is another “Spring Course” next year focused on our engagement with the world. The other is taking up opportunities for more in-depth teaching offered by the Diocese of Oxford.
Every year there is a rolling programme of courses open to all learners from any denomination. These courses are also used as part of the training programme for Licensed Lay Ministers. In September there is a course on “The Bible”, being run at St James Church Centre, Woodley, which is recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about this amazing collection of books.
Content: Most people know some parts of the Bible very well, but find there are other parts they don’t
know at all - and often there is more to discover about even the well-known bits. This course
will offer an overview of the whole Bible, both Old and New Testaments, and the different
books it contains.
Time: Thursday evenings, 7.15 pm - 9.30 pm
Dates: 20, 27 September; 4, 11, 18 October; 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 November
Cost: £36 for ten sessions
Tutors: Revd Dr Keith Beech-Gruneberg, Diocesan Director of Studies, and the Revd Derek Spears, Vicar of Earley St Peter’s
If you are interested in going on the course there are application forms in the welcome area at St Mary's. Alternatively you could do on the diocesan web site to http://www.oxford.anglican.org/page/5338 and click on “Rolling Programme Autumn Term” for the same document.
