Urgent:
The Rising Cost of Repairing Our Church
The government is proposing
to start charging VAT on repairs to listed buildings. This would mean that
every repair we do to St James’ Church would cost 20% more than it does now. If
you would like to register your opposition to this proposal, please add your
name to the e-petition immediately. Here is the reference: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/32229.
The
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
The Church will be showing a
display in a marquee showing the Church over the 60 years of our Queen’s reign.
We are particularly looking for wedding photos from current parishioners,
service sheets or dresses to display. If you have something that could be
displayed, please can you bring to the vicarage before the next meeting on 22nd
May. (anything leant will be
looked after and returned).
Saturday 7th July - Festival

may have been picked up
by mistake. If you happen to stumble across it anywhere please could you let me
know. Thanks, Pam.

The
heraldic stained glass was presented by Sir George Bowyer in or about 1840 and
was either made or restored by Thomas Willement
(1786-1871), noted heraldic artrist and stained glass
maker. The subjects represented are:-
East
window: arms of Henry VII. The side lights are
apparently fragments of biblical or ecclesiastical scenes.
South chancel: east
light, Henry VII; centre light, Henry VI; west light, Henry VIII.
North
chancel: royal arms encircled by the Garter, with Tudor
roses crowned and gartered in the side lights.
South
aisle: east light, Henry VIII; centre light, royal arms
encircled by the Garter, with a jewelled mitre above; west light, Richard III.
North
side of nave: west light, Henry VI; centre light, angel
holding a shield with the arms of the Bowyers ; east
light, Henry VIII.
Tower:
believed to be a portrait of Henry VII.
(The
above information has been supplied by Mr. Patrick Drysdale,
whose booklet Faith and Heraldry. The Stained Glass in the Church of
St. James the Great, Radley is mentioned below under Publications).

There
are six bells, five of which were cast in 1754 and have the following
inscriptions:
Second: “Prosperity
to the parish, A.R. 1754”.
Third:
“Peace and good neighbourhood, A.R. 1754”.

In addition there is also a ting-tang
inscribed “Henry Wright made me, 1617”.

The Sunday
Club is held during the 11 am Sunday morning service (Term time only). The
Family Service on the first Sunday of the month is usually led by the Sunday
Club and we do not hold a Club meeting on that day. We seek to make God
relevant to children of all ages through singing, Bible stories, games and
crafts. As well as the Club meeting on a Sunday morning we have events
throughout the year, such as parties, craft mornings, and fund raising events,
all of which enable the children to build friendships with one another. All
children will be welcome. The Organiser is Jackie
Walker, Tel (01235) 550213.
The Friday
Club, for all children from 8 to 12 years old, meets from 5.30pm to 7 pm.
Activities include games, arts and crafts, sports, swimming, outings and a
short session on an aspect of the Christian faith. See the Church notice board
for our detailed programme each term. More details from Joanna Birkett; Tel
(01865) 739744 or Lucy Mullins, Tel (01235) 543190.
This
takes place in the Church Room usually on the third Wednesday in each month,
starting at 12 noon and is much enjoyed by people who like friendship and
company. The Organiser is Dot Hewlett, Tel. (01235)
531082.
In
these meetings (fortnightly on selected dates on Tuesday evenings and Thursday
mornings) we seek to learn more about God as we look at passages or books from
the Bible, deepen our faith, develop friendships and enjoy Christian
fellowship. Further information from Revd.
Tony Rogerson (01235 532860).
The Women’s
Fellowship Group meets on the 3rd Monday in each month in the
Church Room at 7.30 pm. There is often a speaker, followed by the chance to
chat over a cup of coffee. The Organiser is Heather Rogerson Tel. (01235) 550214.
