The Church of St Mary the Virgin, Hampton PoyleThe church of St Mary the Virgin, Hampton Poyle is a small 13th century church. It has some interesting monuments relating to the Poyle family and a beautiful mediaeval stone screen set into one wall. The church is set in its own churchyard which is open for burials.Hampton Poyle itself is a hamlet of about 150 people. There are no schools or shops but there are a number of large old houses and farms, and a public house. The hamlet is separated from Kidlington by the River Cherwell and by agricultural land. There is a very pleasant half mile walk between St Mary's in Kidlington and St Mary's in Hampton Poyle across meadows of the Cherwell. Hampton Poyle was previously a parish in its own right, but it has been served by the Kidlington Team Ministry for a number of years and was united with the Parish of Kidlington in 1997. Activities specific to St Mary's are mentioned below, but do look too at the Parish page. |

WorshipSunday services of Holy Communion are held in St Mary's Hampton Poyle at 10 a.m. on the 1st and 3rd Sundays in the month. If there is a 5th Sunday, a special Children's Service is held.As befits this small church, the style of service is plain, but the beauty of the building and its peaceful surroundings make worship here very special. There are no regular midweek services at St Mary's Hampton Poyle. See instead the Service Times for the many midweek services held at St Mary's Kidlington and St John's Kidlington, and the Diary and Notices for special services and events. |
