General Notices

TRINITY CHALLENGE
Many thanks to all who have responded to the Challenge and handed in the proceeds of their various activities. So far, the total raised is about £3000. Would anyone who still has money, made from their challenge and their £5 investment, please hand it in to Margaret Day, the Parish Office or a churchwarden, so that we can finalise the figures before the end of our financial year in December.
CHURCH KEYS
If you have a church key please write your name on the list at the back of the church. If you no longer need it please hand it in to Ian Howdill or one of the church wardens. Thank you.
GIVING COMMITTEE
This is a group from the parish who look after our fund-raising activities. They have organised the Trinity Challenge and Gift Day along with many interesting and successful social events, and have already got a good range of activities planned for 2011. But they do need some help. Currently, the representatives from St Mary's are Anthony Ellis and Meghann Hewitt – and they would welcome one or two more to join the group. In particular, we need people to help organise the events which interest them, to act as contacts for selling tickets and to keep an eye on the stocks of Parish goods for sale (in liaison with the other churches). If this would appeal to you, please offer your assistance or find out more from Anthony, Joyce Morris or the churchwardens.
MESSAGE FROM IAN
Thank you for your wonderful messages in the cards I received from the people of St Mary's Church on leaving as organist. Thank you too for being a wonderful supportive body of caring and loving people. I shall miss conducting my choir, seeing all of you and playing for you every Sunday morning but the Great Spirit has a way of moving you on sometimes to fulfil unknown destinies. I still come to practice and teach here at St Mary's and I'm glad to say the organ sounds as good as ever. I look forward to helping out with playing for services in the future and catching up with church progress and gossip! With all love, peace and blessings. Ian.
THANK YOU
It was such a surprise to receive the beautiful flowers, messages and vouchers for a concert in Birmingham Symphony Hall. Thank you so much for your love and generosity and for all your support during the years that I was a church warden. Joyce.
EDUKID ADVENT CHALLENGE
Why not join in the Edukid Advent Challenge! Pick up a copy on your way out today and lets make it a happy new year for children in Cambodia. Gail.
ADVENT IS ... A JOURNEY
- the Travelling Nativity or Posada. What is a Posada? The Posada is a South American tradition that is enjoyed across the world. This journey recreates the journey of Mary and Joseph as they made their way towards Bethlehem. Figures of Mary and Joseph travel around from home to home, with people taking it in turns to create a haven for them to stay on their journey - perhaps sharing a short reading or prayer (resources are provided). This Travelling Nativity or Posada can be seen as an opportunity to encourage us to take some time to reflect on Advent, the time of getting ready to enter the mystery of Christmas. The journey begins on Sun 28th Nov at St John's Church and the figures return to St John's at the Crib Service on Christmas Eve. We would like to encourage people from across the parish to join in as part of your preparation for Christmas. Contact Hilary for more information and to be included on the itinerary.
ADVENT IS A TIME TO READ AND REFLECT
Some collections of daily readings on paper ...
  • Words for Advent: Bible readings on the theme of time edited by Nicola Slee, International Bible Reading Association 2010
  • Light of the Word: daily readings for Advent, compilation by Peter Millar and Neil Paynter, 2009 Wild Goose Publications
  • Good News of Great Joy: daily readings for Advent from around the world, compilation by Neil Paynter, 2010 Wild Goose Publications
and online:
  • Paperless Christmas 2010 The Adventures of Mary and Joseph – The Road Movie from the Bible Reading Fellowship tells the Christmas story in nine entertaining and informative video episodes www.paperlesschristmas.org.uk
  • The Natwivity (the Twitter Nativity) takes advantage of social media's unparalleled capacity to engage people as they go about their everyday life to re-tell the Christmas story in a fresh, personal way www.natwivity.com
JUST A REMINDER ...
that any cheques for the church need to be made payable to Kidlington PCC, or the long version, Kidlington with Hampton - Poyle PCC. Foreign coins are not acceptable as we can do nothing with them. And please could people counting money make sure that there is a note saying what the money is for so that it can be allocated correctly. Thank you.
Dated Notices

MOTHERS UNION Fri 3rd December
We look forward to our next meeting on Friday December 3rd in the Refectory at 9.45 (coffee and mince pies) for 10am. The Revd Mervyn Puleston has kindly agreed to lead an informal Advent Service so we hope you will all be able to come. Anyone is very welcome to join us.
ADVENT PRAYER DAY Tue 7th December
from 9.30am to 7pm in St. John's Church. Advent is a time to pause, and to take time to prepare to come close to the mystery of Christmas. Drop into St John's to experience different ways of praying, including walking the labyrinth, as part of your preparation. Prayer stations will be set up around the building, with words of explanation. Feel free to take time to wander, try something different. The day will end with Iona communion service at 7:30pm.
TIG AT CHRISTMAS Sun 12th December
7pm to 8.30pm at St John's Church. The TIG Christmas extravaganza is happening again this year, and you are invited to join us for seasonal versions of Ready, Steady Cook, and QI interspersed with a re-telling of the Nativity. Along with music and seasonal refreshments - it's a must for your Christmas celebrations.
CTK CAROLS Sat 18th December
10am - 1pm. Do drop by the Cooperative in the High Street while doing your shopping, to sing carols for up to 20 minutes at the front with members of all the churches on the hours of 10, 11 and 12, or to savour hot drinks at the back or hot chestnuts in the car park. If you can plan in advance when you will be there let Janet Warren (376266) or Sue Mills (376546) know: otherwise just turn up - the more the merrier.
GATEHOUSE CHRISTMAS GIFTS Sun 19th December
There will be a box in church on 19th December. Gifts of new hats, gloves, scarves and underpants, plus large bars of chocolate are needed. There is no need to gift wrap the items as this will be done at Gatehouse. In some cases this is their only present so your gifts will be individually wrapped and labelled. Any queries to Pat Bruder on 374067.
Looking Ahead

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Tue 4th January
The lunchtime bible discussion group, will not be meeting in December, because of the Advent Prayer Day (details above). We will meet again on Tuesday 4th January 2011 beginning at 12 noon until 2pm, at St John's Vicarage.
TEA TALKS AT ST MARY'S Sun 9th January +
Dates for your diary. We are arranging a short series of Sunday afternoon talks at St Mary’s Refectory. These will start at 3.00pm with the talk, followed by tea and cakes. The first of these will take place on Sunday 9th January, when Professor Roger Davies will talk on “A Universe of Galaxies”. Further talks will then be held on Sundays 6th February and 6th March, so please keep these dates in mind. We look forward to seeing you there. And if you are able to contribute a cake for one or more of the days, then that would be greatly appreciated – just contact Margaret Day (tel: 375916, email: margaret.day12@btinternet.com).
PARISH QUIZ EVENING Fri 14th January
Our next Parish Quiz Evening will be held on Friday 14th January, at 7.30pm, in St John's. We are hopeful that the weather will be kind to us, and promise that St John's will be warm and cosy. Tickets, costing £5 for the quiz and a hot supper, will be available shortly. Bring your own drink. Come as a “ready-made” team of four or join up with others on the night.
EPIPHANY PARTY Fri 28th January
The Mothers' Union will host this on January 28th 2011. We are not asking for food to be brought this year but we will be selling tickets at £5 to go towards food and entertainment. This is open to all. The last one was a great success and we hope those who enjoyed it then and others, will support it again. More information later.
TO ALL CATHEDRAL WELCOMERS Wed 9th February
A date for your diaries. The Ministry of Welcome AGM will be on Wednesday 9th February 2011 in the Priory Room, Christ Church Cathedral. Coffee or tea will be served from 10am and the meeting will start promptly at 10.30am. Lunches will be available in the Hall for a small charge and there will be a Holy Communion Service at 1pm for those who would like to attend. After that there will be a guided tour of the Cathedral and the Embroidery Centre will also be open for visitors in the afternoon. Would you let me know if you think you might be interested in any or all of the above as I have a form to return with names, saying which you will be attending. Thank you. Pam Cooper
PS If anyone would like to be a Welcomer next year, please ask me for details.
