General Notices

LENTEN COMPLINE
Each Sunday during Lent there will be a Compline or night prayer service in the chancel of St. Mary's at 9pm. This is an ancient service, the final office of the day, a chance to quietly reflect on your day and to dedicate the time ahead to God. The service will be preceded by a sermon and this year we are focussing on chapters 5-12 of St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans. All welcome.
CTK LENT GROUPS
These are in process of being arranged and I will contact those who have signed up. If you omitted to sign up but would like to attend a group it will probably be fine, but please let me know this week. Groups are likely to be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and one afternoon, probably Tuesday. Sue Mills, Tel. 376546; email: sue.mills@ntlworld.com .
THANK YOU
Joyce Franklin and Family wish to thank friends in the congregation for the many messages of sympathy at the recent sad loss of Peter. The funeral service was a marvellous gathering and was a fine tribute to a dear man. Thanks to Anthony and Mervyn and all concerned.
Fund a Football
At the time of writing the "Fund a Football" appeal stands at £3283.72 - representing 218 footballs! Our sincere thanks to everyone who has generously contributed so far.
BOOKS for LENT
Are you looking for a book to accompany your journey through Lent? A couple of suggestions: "Our Sound is our Wound: contemplative listening to a noisy worl"” by Lucy Winkett, Continuum Publishing 2010 (Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book 2010) How do we listen for the voice of God within the soundscapes of our lives and how do we find our own voice? Our lives are lived against the backdrop of an internal and external soundscape. The sounds, noises and music with which we are surrounded in modern life have spiritual implications. In this book Lucy Winkett, Precentor at St Paul's Cathedral, brings together her previous academic interest (history and sociology) and her present, practical life (public ritual, music, and public speaking) and reflects through the prism of Scripture and tradition. "Giving it up: daily Bible readings from Ash Wednesday to Easter Day" by Maggi Dawn, Bible Reading Fellowship 2009 (BRF Lent Book 2010) This title focuses on the importance of understanding who God is - and who God is not. It explores the core Lenten idea of 'giving up', taking it beyond the traditional idea of simply abstaining from something. Maggi Dawn is an Anglican priest, and musician/song writer currently Chaplain and Fellow of Robinson College, Cambridge, where she teaches theology.

Dated Notices

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Tue 2nd Feb
The lunchtime bible discussion group, will be meeting again on Tuesday 2nd February 2010 - 12 noon until 2pm, at St John's Vicarage (come to side door of vicarage next to church) We are continuing a book that has intrigued, mystified and attracted many: the Book of Revelation, with chapters 4 to 8. (we had to cancel Jan's meeting due to sickness) It is a book full of poetic writing, It is a book of visionary excess with stars and swords and angelic beings, a beast rising out of the sea, voices sounding like thunder or trumpets, four horses heralding an apocalypse. In 'Revelations: personal responses to the Books of the Bible', the writer and poet Kathleen Norris writes: '.. it is also an ordinary human vessel, a letter meant to be read aloud. It begins and ends with a blessing upon those who read it to others, and those who hear and heed it.' Come and join us. Bring sandwiches with you, drinks provided.
