We plan to give the things that remain to a charity shop.TRIP 2009We are planning a trip to Holy Island, Lindisfarne in May 2009 and already some 25 people have indicated an interest. Possibly 1st to 4th May, travelling by coach and staying 3 nights near Durham, estimated cost of around £200 per person. Do contact Anthony if you are interested in finding out more.ALTERNATIVE SINGING GROUPIf there is enough interest Stephanie Williams is willing to restart the alternative singing group again from the first Monday in October at St Mary's Church. The session will last for an hour. You do not have to be able to sing or read music; this is open to everyone and is for enjoyment. If you are interested please let either Stephanie Williams or Colin Thackray know so we can see if there are enough people wanting to join in.FLOWER FESTIVALThank you to all who helped and to all who supported the Flower Festival last weekend. This was a great success in every way and raised £716.20 for Christian Aid.DUMMIES?Help! The letters of John are documents described as catholic epistles'- a phrase that is a way of characterising the wide focus of these writings in subject matter. The first letter is probably the most important and continues to explore the truth of the adage: 'God is not a noun but a verb'... 'God is love, and those who live in love live in God, and God lives in them...' Come and join us. Bring sandwiches with you, drinks provided.ST. Dedicated to St Birinus of Dorchester, the chapter will mark his feast day with a celebration of the Guild Office (sung vespers) and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. ST JOHN'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY EVENTS 19th Sept and beyondSt John's will be a hive of activity again in September. Firstly we are holding another Shopping Evening on Friday September 19th, from 6p.m. to 9.p.m - lots of interesting stalls and an early opportunity for buying Christmas presents. Then we have another Weekend of Celebrations on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September. Activities will include a flower festival, memorial flower table, children's vegetable competition, refreshments, an evening of musical entertainment, Harvest celebration (with Revd Canon David Pritchard as guest preacher) and Songs of Praise. Drinks provided.Visiting Exeter College October 26thWe tour the college, have tea and attend evensong.RESTORING HOPE - ACHIVA CONFERENCE on HIV and AIDS, 22nd NovThe conference has been organised by ACHIVA ( Addressing the Challenge of HIV and AIDS), a group of people from our parish. This is a one-day forum to be held at St. Anne's College, Woodstock Road, Oxford, on Saturday 22nd November 2008. Its aim is to spread awareness and understanding of HIV and AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, and to inspire practical approaches to alleviate the suffering. There will be expert speakers including Masi Cowper, Basil Eastwood of Cecily's Fund, Paula Clifford from Christian Aid, Stuart Craig from The Bishop Simeon Trust, Prof Siamon Gordon (You ME and HIV), Glen WIlliams from "Strategies for Hope" and Hope Tshenkeng from the Mothers' Union in Kimberley and Kuruman. The day will be chaired by the Bishop of Oxford. The conference is open to everyone and is of particular interest to those in parishes linked with South Africa, so please come.
