General Notices
CHRISTMAS STAMPS
The Royal Mail have issued two sets of Christmas stamps, Angels and
Madonna and Child. The post offices have been instructed to only sell
the Madonna design if people specifically request it. If it is not
requested in future the Post Office will claim that there is no demand
for religious stamps. So go on and ask for Christmas stamps and tell
your friends and contacts to do the same!
THE TRAVELLING NATIVITY: POSADA
This is an invitation to enter into the season of Advent, the time of
preparing to enter the mystery of Christmas by taking part in a
journey. The Posada is a South American tradition that is enjoyed
across the world. This journey recreates the journey of Mary and
Joseph as they made their way towards Bethlehem. Figures of Mary and
Joseph travel around from home to home, with people taking it in turns
to create a haven for them to stay on their journey. This Travelling
Nativity, or Posada, can be seen as an opportunity to encourage us to
take some time to reflect on what Advent means for each of us and to
share together special moments of quiet and peace, with a short
service and some shared prayers. Prayers and readings are shared at
each household. The journey begins on Sun 2nd Dec at St John's Church
and the figures return to St John's at the Crib Service on Christmas
Eve. If you would like to join in the journey, contact Hilary for more
information and to be included on the itinerary.
CHRISTMAS GIVING FOR GATEHOUSE
A letter received from Gatehouse in Oxford thanks you all for all the
help and support given to the work of Gatehouse over the last year.
Without the willing and generous support of so many volunteers they
could not serve the needs of the Homeless of our city. A recent survey
gave interesting insights about the people they aim to serve. 80% of
those surveyed thought Gatehouse met their needs and 56% wouldn't know
where to go if Gatehouse wasn't there. Gatehouse are asking you to be
generous in your support of Gatehouse this Christmas by remembering
them in your prayers, continuing to donate food and money (would be
very grateful for any donations as part of your Christmas giving) and
by finding volunteers to work at Gatehouse on Sunday afternoons.
THE 0-5 CLUB
Several years ago, the village toddler group was in danger of
folding. Kidlington Baptist church and the Oxford Community church
Housegroup took over its running and turned it into the 0-5 club. It
meets Tuesdays 9.30 to 11am and has registered membership. They are
currently looking to recruit volunteers with Christian values to
support the committee on a regular basis, especially setting out the
equipment prior to the start of the session. If you would like to
help, please contact Marilyn King on 01865 376700
THE BRITISH RED CROSS
are looking for volunteer drivers in the Oxford area to help them
provide transport to Day Centres for people in need. Please contact
David Cook on 01235 552660 or email dcook@redcross.org.uk If you are
interested in helping.
REFECTORY HELPERS
We need a fourth person to join the rota of people
who help to keep the Refectory tidy. The Refectory is cleaned
professionally each Tuesday but is often used on many occasions during
the week. The helpers check that the cloakrooms and kitchen are
kept tidy and ready for the weekend. This involves at the maximum 2
half hour visits every fourth week at a time of your choosing. If you
could help please see Joyce Morris 375922

FAIR TRADE FAIR 1st December
This year's Fair Trade Fair to be
held in Exeter Hall, Kidlington. There will be a wide range of stalls
selling fascinating and beautiful items suitable for Christmas
presents - a shopping experience to look forward to! If you can help
in any way, then you'll be most welcome. We need volunteers to staff
some of the stalls, to sell raffle tickets, to serve refreshments and
generally to help keep everything running. Also important is a good
supply of cakes (with fair trade ingredients where possible) to serve
shoppers who need sustenance! Nearer the time posters will be
available for you to put up near your home, at work or anywhere else
you think appropriate. To offer help please contact Jill Buckeldee
(tel: 374809), Janet Warren (tel: 376266) or Margaret Day (tel:
375916).

Christmas fare or food (No toys are needed) to be made into hampers to
distribute to needy Families in Kidlington before Christmas.
THE ADVENT CAROL SERVICE Dec 2nd
will take place on Advent Sunday, Dec 2nd at
6.30pm in St Mary's. This service starts with a candle lit
procession, has all the customary readings and hymns for Advent and
also includes seasonal anthems sung by the choir. This is thoughtful
yet uplifting way in which to begin our preparation for the birth of
Christ.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT Dec 4th
The lunchtime bible discussion group will be
meeting again on Tuesday 4th December, 12 noon until 2pm, at St John's
Vicarage. As the journey of Advent begins, we'll be thinking of one of
those who have travelled before us, one of our ancestors in faith -
the story of Abraham. Read Genesis chapters 12 to 25. Bring sandwiches
with you, drinks provided. The next date will be Tues 8th Jan 2008.
GIVING AS MISSION Deadline Dec 9th
A time to give. As a parish we support a wide range
of charities and causes, some international, national and local. In
our budget we set aside money to give away, and the Outreach and
Mission sub-group of the PCC allocates this money each year.
To help us
make that decision, please let us know about causes and charities you
would like us to support, remembering the particular work and
contribution made by Christian agencies. Last year we gave to: USPG,
Edukid, Emmaus UK, Rosie (respite nursing for Oxfordshire's sick
youngsters), CCOW (Christian Concern for One World) and OXPIP (Oxford
Parent-Infant Project). Please pass on contact details and brief
background information on charities to churchwardens or to me by
Sunday Dec 9th. Thank you, Hilary

are welcome.

community by all the Kidlington churches. Further details from Sue
Mills (376546) or Gail Nawrocki.
Looking Ahead
EPIPHANY PARTY Jan 4th Ann Beckett is selling tickets
(£3) for the above, arranged by the Mothers' Union. All are
welcome to come to the Refectory on Friday, January 4th at 7 for
7.30pm. Members are asked to bring along a savoury or a sweet
dish. There will be some entertainment.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT Jan 8th The lunchtime bible discussion group
will be meeting again on Tuesday 8th January 2008 beginning at 12 noon
until 2pm, at St John's Vicarage. We begin a new calendar year by
looking at a striking New Testament document in the letter of
James. Condemned roundly by Martin Luther, this is writing that pulls
no punches in addressing such practical issues as care for the poor,
controlling your tongue and unjust discrimination. Pure, unspoilt
religion, in the eyes of God the Father, is this: coming to the help
of orphans and widows in their hardships, and keeping oneself
uncontaminated by the world. Come and join us. Bring sandwiches
with you, drinks provided.
CHCH CATHEDRAL: INSTALLATION OF HONORARY CANONS. Sat 19th Jan
Service at 19th Jan 2008 at 6.00pm. The Bishop of Oxford has
appointed four new Honorary Canons of Christ Church Cathedral, one of
whom is The Revd Sue Booys. You are invited to attend the
Installation, which will be followed by an informal drinks
reception. Please let the Clergy know if you would like to attend.
Regular Series of Lectures and Talks
ST. GILES CHURCH OXFORD, LUNCHTIME TALKS
