GIVING AS MISSION
As s a parish we support a wide range
of charities and causes, some international, national and
local. Please let us know about causes and charities you would like us
to support by Sunday Dec 9th.
CHRISTMAS GIVING FOR GATEHOUSE
A letter received from Gatehouse in Oxford thanks you all for all the
help and support given to the work of Gatehouse over the last year.
Without the willing and generous support of so many volunteers they
could not serve the needs of the Homeless of our city. A recent survey
gave interesting insights about the people they aim to serve. 80% of
those surveyed thought Gatehouse met their needs and 56% wouldn't know
where to go if Gatehouse wasn't there. Gatehouse are asking you to be
generous in your support of Gatehouse this Christmas by remembering
them in your prayers, continuing to donate food and money (would be
very grateful for any donations as part of your Christmas giving) and
by finding volunteers to work at Gatehouse on Sunday afternoons.
THANK YOU! To all those who
supported the Oxfordshire Historic
Churches Trust, Ride or Stride. A total of £586.65 was raised by our 3
Riders/Striders, Well Done! - Marion and Nick Kubat

Ellis - min price £5. It follows the story of our link with "All
Saints" Montshiwa over the last few years, with scenes from the visits
featuring many familiar faces! It also explains the ways in which we
have helped and are trying to help the African community in their
struggle with HIV and AIDS. Profits will go to support current
projects. The solution to your Christmas Present list perhaps? KE.
PRAYER LISTWe have revised the Prayer List.

MEMORIAL SERVICE - Sunday 4th November
The Memorial Service is to be held at 6.30pm
on Sunday 4th November in St. Mary's. If you
would like someone remembered by name at this service, please enter
the name on the list which is on the table at the back of the church.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT 6th November
Food for Thought is a lunchtime bible discussion group that meets in
St John's Vicarage to encourage us to make time to read the Bible,
have a particular focus, enjoy the opportunity to share together and
hear different views. We meet monthly on the first Tuesday of the
month from 12 noon to 2pm, bringing lunch with us.
We will be delving into the mysterious writings of the Apocrypha by
looking at the book of Tobit. It's a fascinating tale, beginning with
2 people in despair and longing for death, a journey with an angel in
disguise, a giant fish whose body parts provide miraculous healing, a
marriage decided in heaven and peace, praise and blessing at the close
of the tale. Come and join us in exploring the meaning in the
mystery. Bring some sandwiches with you, drinks provided. Hilary
ST JOHN'S WEDNESDAY RETIRED CLUB November 7th
Starts 10.30am.
We are having a talk by Richard Westcott on 'The confessions of a
Pantomime Dame', during which Richard transforms from himself to a
fully dressed character. He is an excellent speaker having a return
visit to Kidlington. We welcome all visitors for the modest fee of
£1.
ANGLICANS AND METHODISTS TOGETHER 10th Nov
We are continuing our series of meetings to enable members of the
Anglican and Methodists churches in Kidlington to explore areas of
common interest. We hope we can all learn more about the two
traditions- what we have in common and what are our
practical and theological differences. The next discussion, on the
theme of "Initiation", will be held at St John's on Saturday 10th
November from 11.00 a.m. and this will be followed by a Soup, Bread
and Cheese lunch. If you are interested to find out more about Them
(and Us) then please do come along. It would help if you could sign
the list in the church so we know numbers for catering.
COFFEE MORNING Sat November 17th
10am onwards at St John's, in aid of the 50th Anniversary
celebrations and appeal.
BRING AND BUY SALE Sunday November 18th
A b&b sale (table for cakes, cards, etc with a Raffle) will be held
on Sunday 18th November in the Refectory after the 10.00am service.
It is in aid of The Anadaban Leprosy Mission in Nepal, which we have supported
through the years, they are now treating Aids victims as well as
lepers. Cicely Lee
THE PARISH ADVENT QUIET DAY 24th Nov Advent is a time ... for
wondering ... for preparing to come close to the mystery of Christmas.
It is the time we are all on the way to Bethlehem. I wonder what the
way to Bethlehem is like? The Quiet Day will be held on Saturday 24th
November at Begbroke Priory from 10.30am until 4pm. Coffee will be
served from 10am. Hilary Campbell will lead the day using the Godly
Play approach of wondering and responding to help us in our Advent
preparing. The cost is £8 per person. Please bring a packed lunch.
Tea and coffee are available throughout the day and there will be
homemade cakes in the afternoon. Transport is available if needed.
Please sign the sheets in the churches if you would like to come
along.
CHILDREN'S TAKEOVER SUNDAY 25th Nov at St John's 9.30am. A
Family Communion Service for Christ the King: Children and young
people to take a lead in this service. Children's Takeover Sunday is
an initiative linked to 11 Million Takeover Day which forms part of
the celebrations of the 18th birthday of the United Nations Convention
on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The aim is to hear the voice of
children and young people and give them the opportunity to take a
leadership role in a wide range of activities where often decisions
are made for them.
CHARLES WESLEY SERVICE 25th Nov
A Songs of Praise to celebrate the
tercentenary of the birth of Charles Wesley will be held at Kidlington
Methodist Church on Sunday 25 November, beginning at 6 pm. The
service will be supported by Churches Together in Kidlington and by
other local Methodist churches. Charles Wesley's hymns have been a
gift to Christians of many different traditions, and we look forward
to the opportunity of singing a selection of favourites in this
ecumenical service.
Looking Ahead
FAIR TRADE FAIR 1st December
This year's
Fair Trade Fair
to be held in Exeter Hall, Kidlington.
There will be a wide
range of stalls selling fascinating and beautiful items suitable for
Christmas presents - a shopping experience to look forward to! If you
can help in any way, then you'll be most welcome. We need volunteers
to staff some of the stalls, to sell raffle tickets, to serve
refreshments and generally to help keep everything running. Also
important is a good supply of cakes (with fair trade ingredients where
possible) to serve shoppers who need sustenance! Nearer the time
posters will be available for you to put up near your home, at work or
anywhere else you think appropriate. To offer help please contact
Jill Buckeldee (tel: 374809), Janet Warren (tel: 376266) or Margaret
Day (tel: 375916).
PARISH GIFT SUNDAY Dec 2nd
This year the
Kidlington Health visitors are asking for donations or gifts of
Christmas fare or food (No toys are needed) to be made into hampers to
distribute to needy Families in Kidlington before Christmas.
THE ADVENT CAROL SERVICE Dec 2nd
will take place on Advent Sunday, Dec 2nd at
6.30pm in St Mary's. This service starts with a candle lit
procession, has all the customary readings and hymns for Advent and
also includes seasonal anthems sung by the choir. This is thoughtful
yet uplifting way in which to begin our preparation for the birth of
Christ.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT Dec 4th
The lunchtime bible discussion group will be
meeting again on Tuesday 4th December, 12 noon until 2pm, at St John's
Vicarage. As the journey of Advent begins, we'll be thinking of one of
those who have travelled before us, one of our ancestors in faith -
the story of Abraham. Read Genesis chapters 12 to 25. Bring sandwiches
with you, drinks provided. The next date will be Tues 8th Jan 2008.
GIVING AS MISSION Deadline Dec 9th
A time to give. As a parish we support a wide range
of charities and causes, some international, national and local. In
our budget we set aside money to give away, and the Outreach and
Mission sub-group of the PCC allocates this money each year.
To help us
make that decision, please let us know about causes and charities you
would like us to support, remembering the particular work and
contribution made by Christian agencies. Last year we gave to: USPG,
Edukid, Emmaus UK, Rosie (respite nursing for Oxfordshire's sick
youngsters), CCOW (Christian Concern for One World) and OXPIP (Oxford
Parent-Infant Project). Please pass on contact details and brief
background information on charities to churchwardens or to me by
Sunday Dec 9th. Thank you, Hilary
