General Notices

HARVEST WITHOUT WATER
Every year we celebrate Harvest Festivals but we are inclined to forget the part that water plays in harvest. It is so obvious that when the rains fail to fall in so many parts of the world famine follows. While a dearth of water can be a disaster so can too much rainfall create huge problems? In our own part of the world we have seen in recent months the terrifying results of heavy and sustained rainfall. However our problems are slight compared with those faced by many people living from the west of Africa right across to Ethiopia. The floods in that vast region mean that there will be no crops harvested this year. Water like fire is a good servant but can so easily turn into a frightening master. We ought to be so thankful that our supply of water from the heavens is relatively constant and assured, because in so many parts of the world that is not the case. At this Harvest season I want to celebrate and give thanks for what I perceive as being the most precious liquid of all. I read recently that a small plastic bottle of water sold in so many outlets is more expensive than a similar quantity of petrol. Do I need to remind you that a litre of petrol costs just less than a pound? I rarely buy a bottle of water but I know that it can cost about 60 0r 70 pence for half a litre! It strikes me that tap water is a great deal less expensive and I am reliably informed is better for you! For all that, we waste so much water in our culture and take it for granted. This harvest season spare a thought for people in many parts of the world who can not turn on a tap and have a ready supply of water. Instead they may have to trek a distance to collect water that has not been purified and can do untold harm to their health. In 2008 the United Nations is making it a Year of Sanitation when the End Water Poverty Campaign will highlight the world's sanitation crisis. World Leaders will be asked to sign up to a global action plan for sanitation and water and to invest more money in water and sanitation because they can reduce so much global poverty. It gives us the opportunity to alleviate suffering if we add our voice by contacting this website: www.endwaterpoverty.org.
HELP NEEDED! - The Traidcraft team ...
... is looking for help in delivering the stock up to St John's once a month. This is not a time consuming activity; it consists of taking the Traidcraft boxes to St John's church, unloading them there (either on a Friday or Saturday to suit) and to return them to St Mary's on the following day, Sunday. Equally if anyone would like to help on the Traidcraft stall on a Sunday morning at St Mary's you would be most welcome - it's a good way of promoting and learning about Fair Trade. If you would like to discuss either of these please contact Jill or Robert Buckeldee on 01865 374809 or jillbuckeldee1 at mac.com
REDUNDANT SEWING MACHINES
If you have a working sewing machine no longer in use, and would be willing to donate it to Masi Cowper's HIV/AIDS work in this country, please let me know ASAP. Kathryn
FLOWER FESTIVAL
This event was a great success. The many flower arrangements were fabulous and the church looked absolutely beautiful! Marianne and I would like to thank everyone for their help and support during the weekend. Special thanks go to our friends from St Thomas More, the Methodist Church and St John's Church, who came and helped with refreshments and also acted as Stewards. There was a wonderful feeling of unity between us all. Thank you also to Anthony and Jason for conducting both the opening and closing services. This was a weekend to remember. The amount of money to be sent to Christian Aid is £636.02. Ann Beckett, Kidlington Evening Townswomen Guild.
MOTHERS' UNION
A word of thanks to all who supported the MU Area meeting & especially to those who helped in the kitchen. The evening was a great success. At the meeting we heard an appeal from the MU Diocesan President of Kimberley & Kuruman (whose name is Hope and who some of us met in South Africa) for funds to help with accommodation & feeding at a Conference, the theme of which is 'Water, Source of Life' in an area where water is not easily accessible and which is the second poorest area after the Eastern Cape. Many thanks to all who made donations as a result of this appeal. Any further contributions would be gratefully accepted by Kathryn (Ellis) who is in direct contact with Hope. Thank you.
NEWS FROM THE DIOCESE OF OXFORD
The Bishop's flood appeal gives a helping hand and has raised £33,000 to help those affected by the floods across the Thames Valley. The fund is intended as a source of small grants to help people get back on their feet again. If you know of anyone in the community suffering as a result of the floods please tell them about the fund and encourage them to apply. Application forms on the Diocesan Web site.

The Tell Bishop John Campaign ties in with the Back to Church Sunday on the 30th September. Bishop John is appealing to people who have given up coming to church to tell him why. Contact Bishop John on the special website. Your comments will be strictly confidential. The Bishop would like to understand and find out how to make our churches as welcoming as possible to all comers.

New Podcasts on the Net are available from the Diocesan Website This is a pilot series of podcasts which are intended to help Christians engage in contemporary issues. The next one will be on Back to Church Sunday.

The Diocesan web site is also available from link on our homepage.

CONGRATULATIONS
from St John's congregation to Chima Anya who recently qualified as a medical doctor. He has been working in a hospital in Dartford, Kent, for the past two months.
THANK YOU -- FUN DAY AT HAMPTON POYLE
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our Fun Day! We made the wonderful amount of £504.
THANK YOU -- TEDDY BEAR'S PICNIC
This was a great success. We had a wonderful afternoon with children of all ages --- also lots and lots of lovely Teddy Bears. (Some of which were quite old) and everyone joined in the fun. The Mothers' Union provided the refreshments for the children and parents and it was suggested whether this could become an Annual Event. I would like to thank everyone that helped to make this a great party and thanks especially to Pam Cooper who thought up the idea. Ann Beckett.
SUMMER SUNDAY TEAS
are being served in the Refectory 3pm - 5pm each week starting on Sunday 13th May. Come along and enjoy the delicious home made cakes, a good way of ending a Sunday afternoon walk!
OPEN CHURCHES
St Mary's will again be open to visitors this summer on Wednesday afternoons from 2.30pm to 5.30pm and Sunday afternoons from 12.30pm to 5.30pm. If you can help by being in church on any of these afternoons, please enter your name on the rota. In addition to welcoming visitors, time spent in the quietness of St Mary's is a wonderful antidote to the stresses and strains of our busy lives. As St Mary's is included in Simon Jenkins' book, England's Thousand Best Churches, we can expect to receive some visitors wishing to view our fine medieval church. Andrew Lloyd Webber set up the Open Churches Trust so that people can visit some of the finest of the country's churches and 'enjoy not only the beauty but also the unique history each can extol'. On Wednesdays we would encourage two stewards to be present. There is a set of notes about the history and architecture of St Mary's on the table near the church door. I am very willing to arrange a church tour if it will help. John Amor

BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY 30th Sept
As many of you know on September 30th, Churches in this Diocese are joining churches across the land in a project know as Back to Church Sunday. This initiative began a few years ago in a Manchester. It was realised that there people who used to attend Church either in the parish or elsewhere who had for various reasons stopped being church goers. The incumbent thought that the congregation would know of people who might, if invited, come to Church for a special service. The congregation duly invited their guests to join them for a Church service with impressive results. Now that the idea has spread to Kidlington we are going to try it out. Read more ...

HARVEST FESTIVALS 30th September 2007

Harvest is a time to stop and look around us at the resources and gifts given to us. This year our celebrations fall within British Food Fortnight, offering a chance to celebrate the diversity of local British produce and remember the local food chain, including those farmers affected by recent foot and mouth outbreaks. So take the time in your shopping particularly over these 2 weeks to choose local, seasonal, British produce.
  • St John's: Bring whatever you can as your harvest gifts, fresh food, tins, dried goods, home-grown produce, plants etc to church. They will be taken to the local hospice Helen and Douglas House (currently celebrating 25 years of providing hospice care for children and young people). It is also Back to Church Sunday (see below) and we will take time, over after service coffee and refreshments, to welcome returners and get to know one another more. Hilary.
  • St Mary's K: The Harvest gifts will be given to a local Organisation who provide for the Homeless. They find tins and packaged food particularly useful. Please could you offer these? Anthony.
ORDINATION OF WILLIAM WHYTE 30th Sept
The service is at 5pm in Dorchester Abbey. Please let Anthony know if you would like to go (asap).
