regularly this way - your new box of envelopes is now in church so
please collect it. Please note that to go with the new design boxes
and the new recording computer program the envelope numbers have been
tidied up, so don't be surprised if you have a different number this
year. If you would like a set of envelopes, then please do contact

VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA
Kathryn Ellis, Revd Hilary Campbell and Eleanor Williamson are due to
leave for their visit to Johannesburg and Montshiwa on Sunday, March
4th overnight. Their programme will include visits to projects run by
the Bishop Simeon Trust and they will be meeting up with Masi
Cowper. The second half of the visit will be to Montshiwa where they
will endeavour to start up similar projects to help fight HIV/AIDS,
and visit schools. They will also be introducing our own, home-grown,
"Mowana" Project - a mini-theatre using puppets made from recycled
materials. This has aroused interest from the media and there is a
possibility that the project may be featured on local television in
the coming week - so watch out! Any help offered with expenses would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you to all who have generously helped so
far. Kathryn Ellis
LENTEN CHALLENGE 2007
This year the focus for our Lenten Challenge is on stewardship of the
church. Each week, we will reflect on one aspect of our church life,
celebrating what we do now and exploring future needs and
opportunities, with the aim of challenging ourselves on our financial
commitments to our church. The Lenten Challenge will culminate on
March 25th with a Pledge Sunday, when we will be encouraged to
recommit ourselves to the support of our church.
LENT BOOKS
- Turning points the CAFOD/Christian
Aid Lent book 2007 (DLT, 2007, £4.99) short, challenging readings
for each day of Lent
- Approaching Easter (Lion 2006 - £9.99) by
Jane Williams. Reflections by the wife of the Archbishop of Canterbury
with beautiful illustrations.
Both available from Blackwells.
A letter to supporters of Gatehouse
Dear Friends, as we come to the end of celebrating the
Week of Christian Unity, I would like to celebrate the work of the
Gatehouse and thank you for your ongoing support. The Gatehouse has
attracted universal recognition for its work and we see that our job
is to provide evidence of the on-going love of God, even when someone
feels at the bottom of the heap. The Gatehouse project owes its
existence to the work of Churches Together in Oxford. We have over 200
volunteers helping in the cafe and as many more supplying wonderful
food. But in 2006 our expenditure was more than our income, the
shortfall being covered by our reserves. We are therefore asking all
churches if they could review the level of their giving in 2007 so
that we can close the gap in our finances. Thank you. Andrew Bunch,
Chair of Trustees.
Regular Lecture Series
WORKING LUNCHES AT ST. MICHAEL'S
As ever, 1.0pm to 1.45pm on Tuesdays.
- 6th March If you were the new Bishop of Oxford what would your agenda be?
The
Rt Revd John Pritchard will be inaugurated as the
new bishop of Oxford in Christ Church cathedral on
8th June. What do you think his priorities
should be? He has special responsibility for the
Deaneries of Oxford and Cowley, while in the rest
of the diocese most of the functions of a bishop
are delegated to the three area bishops
of Buckingham, Dorchester and Reading. One
priority that has been proposed for him is church
growth, but what do we mean by this and what can a
bishop do about it? How much time should the
bishop spend with the gathered church and how much
with the wider community of the three counties
beyond the church. How much time should he spend
with individual churches or with shaping a
strategy for the diocese? What do we mean by a
strategy for the diocese?
- 27th March How much does our sense of identity depend on knowing who our parents were?
For some people it is a great shock to discover that they are
adopted; others may appreciate their adoptive parents more. Most
people want to find out something about their real/biological
parents. There have been changes in the law which make it easier to
contact one's real parents; this has had advantages and
disadvantages. What gives us identity?

The Colour of Love - An Exhibition of Modern Christian Art -
22nd April- 9th June
An exhibition of 38 paintings and four reliefs of
the life of Jesus by some very famous artists:
Sutherland, Heron, Frink, Gill and Burra and
others who are still alive and will be associated
with the exhibition, such as Mynheer and Cazalet,
will be hosted by the Wesley Memorial Methodist
Church (New Inn Hall street) and St Michael at
the North Gate (corner of Cornmarket and Ship
Streets). Opening hours: 11am to 5pm, Monday to
Saturday. Stewards needed: We urgently need to
recruit 'Stewards' to sit in on the exhibition and
keep an eye on things. The first to volunteer will
have their choice of days and times. I am sure
that lots of people, young and old, would enjoy
being Stewards. Please note that the paintings are
insured and there is usually help at hand in the
adjacent Church Offices. Your presence at the
exhibition is a deterrent to those who would do
ill and a support to the law abiding. In the event
of wrongdoing, you would be expected to exert
moral influence, not physical. However, much of
the reward of being a Steward, is to be with some
quite superb paintings for a couple of hours of
pure enjoyment. For more
information please contact The Revd Hugh Lee, City
Rector and Priest-in-Charge
St Michael at the
North Gate Tel 01865 316245.

know if you can help, or liaise with Sue Mills (376546) or Sheila
Alcraft.
ONE-DAY CONFERENCE May 14th entitled "Grandparents Today:
Expectations and Realities" run by the Diocese of Oxford on Monday
14th May 2007 at Diocesan Church House, North Hinksey. "Grandparents
have always fulfilled an important role within family networks,
however it is evident that the role has changed. Many Grandparents
find themselves supporting their Children by caring for Grandchildren
in a Family crisis, such as separation or divorce, or because both
Parents need to go out to work." Key Speaker - Dr Robin Mann from
Oxford University. A fee of £10 will be charged (£5 conc)
and tea/coffee and a sandwich lunch will be provided. If you would
like to go please pick up a leaflet at the back of the church.
OLD TIME MUSIC HALL 16th June
In previous years the Parish Fete has been one of
our pivotal summer activities. This year we plan instead to have an
Old Time Music Hall on the evening of Saturday 16th June in St Mary's K.
An Old Time Music Hall requires variety
- songsters, dancers, comics, jugglers, magicians, monologue/dialogue
actors, instrumentalists. If you think your talents fall
into any of these categories, or others not specified, and are willing
to audition for a place in the programme please let Stephanie Williams
know on ph. 461193. She' s going to put together as varied a "menu"
as possible, with as much talent as we can muster, especially musical,
from within our three congregations and from outside so that the whole
Parish can enjoy a quality night out. Please put yourself forward if
you would like a place in the performance spotlight. The audience will
be encouraged to dress up and there will be wine and strawberries in
the interval. Much additional help will be required. If you would like
to be part of a small organising committee please see Joyce Morris
Tel 375922.
