Collection of Church kneelers

At St Mary Magdalene, Woodstock

The project to produce embroidered kneelers started at the end of 1985 and was sponsored by the 'Friends of the Church' . Various designs include church symbolism, local history, organisations, natural history, overseas interest and a few were related to professional life or service of the sponsor. Many were emblems of the armed services and of these many were donated as a memorial.

Any of the kneelers, even the simplest designs, has about 28,000 stitches, each with 'resolution' of about 10 threads to one inch. Each kneeler represents many hours of individual work varying from a month to a year.

To carry out stitching work alone it took not less than 20,000 hours of individual work to produce collection. About 70 people took part in the project of an age range from 9 years to over 80 years.
